THE STORY OF OUR NAME
The Gu Chu Sum Movement takes its name from the three months which witnessed violently – suppressed independence demonstrations of young Tibetans in the capital city of Lhasa.
GU (9) : 27 SEPTEMBER 1987
CHU (10) : 1 OCTOBER 1987
SUM (3) : 5 MARCH 1988
Many who spoke out against the Chinese communist totalitarian regime and its unjust suppression of Tibet were imprisoned and subjected to brutality and torture.
Since 1959, Tibetans involved in the non – violent struggle against Chinese occupation have been imprisoned, mercilessly tortured, and subjected to brutality and repressive policies. In the subsequent decades, the violation of human rights ad harsh extrajudicial punishments have continued and worsened, leading o the continued deterioration of the human rights situation in Tibet. Many of our members were active in peak moments of protest in the late 1980s and 2008.
