Around 60 Tibetans were detained from Dza Wonpo of Kardze (Ch: Ganzi) Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Sichuan Province, Tibetan Province of Kham, on 23 – 24 August 2021, according to a report by Tibetan Centre for Human Rights and Democracy (TCHRD).
The arrested Tibetans were detained on the charges of possession of portraits of His Holiness the Dalai Lama. Following the arrests, Dza Wonpo was raided on 25th August, 2021 including the homes and mobile phones of the residents. Local Tibetan residents aged 18 and above were further called upon to assemble for “legal education” where there were warned against the possession of portraits of His Holiness the Dalai Lama and contacting Tibetans in exile.
The increasing restrictions and surveillance is followed by the arrests of Tenzin Nyima and other Tibetans protested against the Chinese government in late 2019, by distributing flyers
demanding freedom in Tibet. Tenzin Nyima died brutally in custody on January 2021.
