A Tibetan political prisoner jailed who was jailed for celebrating the birthday of His Holiness the Dalai Lama in 2015, has been released.

Ajaja, a former monk of Kirti Monastery at Ngaba in the traditional Tibetan province of Amdo, has been released after spending more than five years in Chinese prison. Ajaja was released earlier this month after completing his sentence, Kanyak Tsering—a spokesman at Kirti’s Dharamsla-based branch monastery in exile confirmed that Ajaja was released around Dec. 10 and reached his family home on December 12.

“He was believed to have been arrested for organizing a grand celebration of His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s birthday in Ngaba…It was a rare public celebration of the Dalai Lama’s birthday, and Ajaja along with most of the organizers were arrested following the event,” he added, citing sources in Ngaba. Ajaja and nine other Tibetans who took part in Gyaton or the 80th birthday celebration of His Holiness the Dalai Lama in 2015 at Ngaba County were arrested following the celebrations.

On 6 December 2016, the Intermediate Peoples’ Court in Barkham, Ngaba prefecture sentenced the 10 Tibetans to various terms of 5 to 14 years in prison with Ajaja handed a 5-year prison term by the Chinese court. Nine other Tibetans jailed alongside Ajaja, and serving prison terms ranging from five to 14 years, have still not been released. Further details about the health condition of Ajaja is unavailable at the moment.
