Tibetan writer sentenced to a four-year prison term

 Lobsang Lhundup who goes by the pen name Dhi Lhaden was sentenced to four years prison term after a secret trial according to a news report by Radio Free Asia (RFA) dated 15 October 2021. Dhi Lhaden was first taken into custody in June 2019. He was accused of “creating disorder among the public” due to his writings that have criticized the Chinese rule in Tibet. The family was barred from meeting him following his arrest and his current health status is unknown.

Lhundup is from Golog in the traditional Tibetan province of Amdo. He was ordained as a monk at 11 years old and joined Larung Gar Tibetan Buddhist Academy later. He has traveled widely in Tibet after teaching Buddhism at Drepung and Sera Monasteries. He has written and published about the 2008 protests against the Chinese rule in Tibet that was spread across the whole of Tibet.

There has been a growing crackdown on writers, singers, and artists who have been vocal in expressing discontent with the Chinese rule in Tibet since 2008.
