Former political prisoner and writer Ra Tsering Dhondup passed away

Former political prisoner and writer Ra Tsering Dhondup passed away on 15 September 2021 at Chengdu hospital, according to a report by Radio Free Asia (RFA).

Sources confirmed that Tsering Dhondup was among four Tibetans who were arrested from Ngaba in the traditional Tibetan province of Amdo, under the charges of publication of a book about the real situation in Tibet post-2008.  In February 2010, he was sentenced to three years imprisonment after being arbitrarily detained in Barkham city.

Tsering Dhondup’s health further deteriorated after his release from prison in 2013. He passed away due to his failing liver which worsened even under continuous medical care. The sources further deliberated that the Tibetan political prisoners in Chinese prisons are deprived of basic needs such as food, clothing, and medical care. They are brutally tortured which often leads to major health complications especially liver and kidney.

Tsering Dhondup has released his writings from prison upon his release even under deteriorating health. His pen name was Shinglo Marpo (Eng: Red Leaf). He was a monk from Rongda Monastery, Khyung Chu county (Chi: Hongyuan) in Amdo. He was 35 years old.
