Tibetan Political Prisoner Released

Gendun Dakpa has been released after a five-year prison term according to a report by Free Tibet on 30 October 2021. 

According to the report, Gendun Dakpa was arbitrarily detained from Thangkor Socktsang Monastery in 2015. He was sentenced to a five-year prison term under the charges of “inciting separatism”.

He was released in August 2021 with poor health and has been admitted to the hospital since then. There has been no update regarding his present condition due to severe communication restrictions. Furthermore, Gendun Dakpa and his family are under strict state surveillance.

Gendun Dakpa and Lobsang Sherab were arbitrarily detained on 24 August 2015 when Thangkor Monastery was raided. They were later sentenced in a secret trial after a year in custody. They were denied to right of access to legal representation. The Monks were accused of “inciting separatism” and “sharing information with Tibetans in exile”. The accusations were related to the peaceful protests of Tibetan nomads in 2015 against Government land seizures in Ka Bharma Village, Ngaba. The two monks were accused of sharing the information outside.
